Exceptional recource for 2K8
Just as Mr. Mulcare wrote the definitive resource for AD on Win2K3, he has done it again with this resource kit. His knowledge of the product and ability to pass along critical information on Active Directory is exceptional. Keep up the good work and I look forward to whatever you write for Win7!

Great Book to Jump-in With
I wrote a couple of sidebars for this book and enjoyed reading it when I received my copy. If you're looking for a book to give you a good picture of the Windows Server 2008 AD landscape including the various services which have been branded as part of AD (e.g. Certificate Services, Rights Management, etc), this is a good title to pick-up. There are plenty of screenshots and procedural walkthroughs as well as advice from the standpoint of Microsoft. If you're looking for something super detailed and in-depth, this may not be what you're looking for.--Brian DesmondActive Directory MVP

Useful technical reference for SQL DBA
Microsoft keeps adding new functionality to SQL server so the latest version, SQL 2008 R2, has become vastly complex. So much so that Microsoft has divided up their DBA certifications into three specializations: core DBA and developer and BI. Correspondingly, technical books on SQL 2008 tend to be divided up along the same lines. Thus I would have thought it would be impossible to cover the whole in a single book. But this book attempts to do just that. And it does a pretty good job, in my opinion. Of course it cannot go into great depth on any one subject, but it goes into enough depth to be useful to a practicing DBA in any of the three categories. They manage it by making the book huge. So huge that, apparently, it can't all be printed in a single book. So when you buy the book, you get a book that is around 1700 pages (1550 pages of text and about 100 pages of index and 50 of front material) and in the back of the book is a CD that contains another 800 or so pages in...

A case where the Kindle book beats print?
I purchased the Kindle edition and am pleased to report that it does contain all 56 chapters, so no need to download "part 2" of the book as a pdf. The graphics are in colour and in all cases the text in screen-dumps is readable (if fuzzy). The index uses a notation like "CD:2331" when referring to pages that are on the pdf included with the print edition. Thankfully these links take you to the correct location in the Kindle book. The content is wide ranging but don't expect miracles in what is now a huge platform. For example Master Data Services gets only a short overview. Overall the book is very good value.

A must have resource for the working administrator.
As usual we are always expected to know the new stuff and support it but no one wants to ever pay for training so what to do? I did a lot of scouring for a good server 08R2 book and it was slim pickings. Most books were out of date (R1) or simply geared toward studying for a test which does me little good in defining an AD upgrade road map and figuring out what to define for app server standards. I finally found this on amazon and relying on reviews and the TOC i opted to get it. Its a fantastic resource but huge so expect to be doing some serious reading. What I loved is that right off they talk about what is new in R2. This is a big help. Lets get features out of the way immediately. The rest of the book is structured logically but is easy to jump around in since life does not follow a table of contents. I strongly recommed this if you support windows servers in a real world environment. If you are looking to take an MCSE test, then stick to the exam cram for those since this will...

Excellent General Reference for Windows Server 2008 R2
In the past, I have used the Mark Minasi "Mastering" series of books for general reference material on the various Windows Server versions (going back to NT4). This is the first "Unleashed" book I have picked up, and it has been every bit as good as any of the "Mastering" books. I will honestly say that I was a bit concerned with a book having five different authors. However, there is no difference in the quality of the material that I could find, as well as the clarity of the information presented. As previously indicated in other reviews, the section on migrating from previous versions of Active Directory to 2008 R2 is excellent. The book covers a lot of Active Directory material overall, and provides good real-world examples that apply to both large and small site designs. The only thing that was missing was some expanded coverage of the Active Directory Administrative Center, which is a great tool for new admins (and can make common tasks much easier for the more...

This is One Impressive Book!
Windows Server 2008 R2 Unleashed is a superior, comprehensive reference book making it a true must have for every system administrator. First, the book itself is huge, totaling 1680 pages. I also appreciate the hardcover and obvious quality; I know my investment will last for years. The content is even more amazing. It didn't find one subject not explored. Where other books only touch on certain topics, such as direct access, this reference book dives into each topic in great detail. Additionally I found all the material to be current and accurate. Unleashed gives some highly detailed coverage to migration, so if you are looking to migrate your 2k or 2003 servers, you will want to read the first few chapters at minimum.Due to the large size, you will also probably want to select the chapters that apply to your specific environment and focus on those. One thing nice about this book is it does permit the reader to skip around among the chapters. Like I said, it is...

Great reference book for experienced and inexperienced users
You could start at the beginning and read all the way through 'Windows Server 2008 R2 Administration Instant Reference' by Matt Hester and Chris Henley. Part 1 of the book of the book ("Getting Started") walks the reader through planning, installing and upgrading the operating system, while subsequent sections dive into details about specific areas of the software. But a more reasonable approach is to open to the section on which you are working today. Each chapter is structured so that you can dig into the detail you need. Each topic begins with an explanation of concepts and definitions of key terms. This part is critical for someone like me, who doesn't spend his days managing servers. Experienced administrators may skip this section and jump to the detailed explanations of how to use and configure each feature of Windows Server 2008 R2. Basic functionality is described first, followed by more advanced features.A section on Active Directory, for example,...

This book saves lives
I have had my copy for over a month and I can't live without it. I am mainly a Unix sysadmin and am actually pretty rusty with Windows Server 2008. This book has helped me build a completely functional domain and forest from the ground up on my own. I couldn't get by without it. Much more convenient than reading 60 articles on the web. Great reference and the author is very clear about even the most minute tasks.Highly recommend for administrators and anyone interested in Windows Server infrastructure!

Most strange thing I've seen was when I've put second card, Win7 installed some additional drivers like PCIe devices I've ever seen before (I've had SLI setups before, and I've never seen that), so maybe it's my new mobo (UEFI-capable) special... I've got 2x GTX 460 in SLI (both working fine), MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard, monitor plugged into socket #1 and TV plugged into socket #2 - both in primary card (mobo has 2x PCIe slots only).
